York Region’s first Thai Boxing event was held here at Point Blank last Saturday evening. The event was a huge success. Point Blank was represented by Jermaine Haughton, Dan Sims and Andrew Spatafora.

Dan Sims and Andrew Spatafora, who were both debuting in their first fights, showed amazing skills and came away with victories over their opponents.

The Main Event was definitely the most exciting bout!! Jermaine Haughton and Mark McDonald (Toronto Kickboxing and Muay Thai) brought the crowd to their feet with the intensity of their match. Unfortunately, the decision of the bout went to Mark McDonald. However, Jermaine’s skills and talent were truly displayed and proved why he is one Ontario’s Top Athletes. Congratulations to all of our athletes!!

Thanks to all the participating schools, athletes, volunteers, and our sponsors without whom the event would not have been possible.

We look forward to bringing you the best in Boxing and Thai Boxing in the new year. Our next Thai Boxing event is tentatively planned for April 26th, 2008. Hope to see you then!

Team Point Blank’s Jermaine Haughton, Nino ‘The Panino’ Lazzara, and Saman ‘Ego Boy’ Mohammadzadeh competed in last Saturday’s Fall Fury Thai Boxing event at Kombat Arts in Mississauga.

In the first match of the evening Nino faced off against Richard Parker of Phoenix Fight Club in Hamilton, losing by decision. Despite his opponent having had previous fight experience Nino put up a great fight, making his opponent earn every point of his win.

This was followed up by a very close split decision loss by Saman against Mark Mendoza of the hosting club, Kombat Arts in Mississauga. This was one of the most exciting bouts of the evening. Saman controlled much of the bout with amazing clinch fighting, and a very strong kicking game. However, the decision of the judges fell in favour of his opponent.

Despite having the most memorable ring entrance of the evening Jermaine was defeated later in the evening by Denis Luu of TKO, in Kitchener. Jermaine effectively used his longer reach to give Denis a good fight, but his opponent’s kicking game and effective use of the leg catch earned him the victory.

Sydney Shields, Sarah Shields, and Alyssa Ultimo tied for 4th place in there division, with Sydney and Alyssa both making it to the semi-finals, and Sarah losing a hard fought match for 3rd place.

Sam Ronin placed 4th in his division losing the 3rd place match. With only seconds remaining in the match Sam had partially mounted the back of his opponent, but ran out of time before he could remove his opponents arm from his head and tie the score.

Unfortunately, Ethan Hyatt who had won his first match; but hurt his neck during his 2nd and was unable to continue his next two matches.

I received some very positive comments from other coaches about our kids’ performance. We are very proud of each of them, and the hard work they put into getting ready for the tournament. Congratulations Team.

Congratulations Point Blank Boxers Andrew Aceti and Josh ‘The Duffman’ Duff who each put on a great performance at Saturday’s ‘A Night of Action’ in Mississauga. In what was billed as the Co-Main event of the evening Andrew won his bout by decision after the third round. Despite Andrew’s opponent, Adelbert Belen, being much taller than him, standing at almost 6’3”, Andrew was able to take the fight to the inside where he dominated him his aggressiveness and catch him several times with a solid left hook.

After some early pre-fight jitters Josh put on an excellent performance against his opponent, Francis Pastolero, who just came off a victory in last weekends Brampton Cup. Josh was able to continue the fight, despite suffering a bloody nose at the end of the first round, until the fight was ended in the second round by the referee in favour of his opponent.

They represented the club very well and I am extremely proud of both athletes. We are currently working on a second fight for Andrew next Friday the 23rd, 2007.
