Ohio MMA Fights (Oct. 5, 2008 – Streetsboro, Ohio)

Devin Andrews and Michael Stevens headed down to Streetsboro, Ohio this past Sunday to compete as Point Blank’s first MMA competitive athlete, and returned with wins over each of their opponents.

Unlike the unsanctioned/illegal MMA fights in which other clubs are participating, these events are officially sanctioned and recognized by the Ohio State Athletic Commission, and are run with the strictest of government set guidelines and safety standards.

Devin was the 5th bout of the night facing an opponent who contrary to us being told was a first time fighter had 3 previous MMA bouts. Despite being taken by surprise by an initial strike in the first round, he quickly took control of his opponent, dominated him from the top, and effectively neutralized and reversed his opponent’s attempts to submit from the bottom. After three rounds Devin was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

Mike stepped into the cage as the 10th bout of the night. He and his opponent battled it out, in the first round, as each tried to take the lead with strikes, and fought hard for control of the tie-up. By the end of the first round each opponent was near exhaustion. As the second round started Mike took control of his opponent by taking him to the ground against the cage where he took control of the fight. As his opponent tried to stand himself up Mike managed to get his opponent into a guillotine choke and pull him down to lock it into position forcing his opponent to tap out and give Mike the win.

Our friends from Kombat Arts, in Mississauga, also had three athletes on the same card and secured themselves two victories making the total count for our Canadian athletes 4 wins out of 5 matches.

The promoter of the event commented on how tough our guys were, the great show they put on, and said they hope we will come down again for their next event. Congratulations Mike and Devin. A special thanks to Athan, George and Tammy who made the trip down to Ohio with us to cheer the guys on.

2008 Arnie Boehm Boxing Tournament (Oct. 3-5, 2008 – St. Catherines)

This past weekend Cole Boetteger, Alham Talmal and Nick Bullard made their competitive debuts in this year’s Arnie Boehm Novice Boxing Championships in St. Catherines. It was an excellent performance by all three of these boxers.

Friday night Cole lost to Arthur Biyarslanov of teh Cabbagetown Youth Boxing Club, in the 50 kg Cadet B finals, when the referee stopped the fight in the first round after Cole received a second standing 8 count. Despite the loss, Cole put up a great effort facing his opponent who had had 3 previous bouts, and still earned himself the Silver medal.

Later that night Nick faced Victor Plaza of the Ajax Boxing club in the 50 kg Cadet C semi-finals. This was certainly on of the best fights of the night with Nick coming back from a 9 point deficit at the end of the first round; to tie the match at 23-23 against his opponent by the end of the third round. Despite the fantastic comeback the officials gave the win to Nick’s opponent and awarded him the Bronze medal.

On Saturday, Elham faced off against Victor Plaza in the 50 kg Cadet C finals. Another hard fought bout going the full three rounds, with Elham taking home the Silver medal in a sex point loss to his opponent.

We received some great comments from other coaches about our athletes, and we have been asked if they would be interested in competing on Nov. 19 in Barrie, at the Uptown Boxing Club show. Congratulations guys!

Ray McGibbons Gloves Boxing Tournament (April 5, 2008 – St. Catherines)

Imran Habibulla, Darius Gore and Kevin Hooper of Team Point Blank Boxing participated in the 2008 Ray McGibbons Gloves in St. Catherines over the weekend. After what tuned into the longest day single day of competition we had ever experienced, with our own 6am start from Aurora and over 100 bouts during the course of the day our athletes gave it their all in their debut boxing matches.

Imran lost the +91kg Senior Novice semi-finals in third round with an RSCO (Outscore) with his opponent moving on to the finals non Sunday. Darius retired from bout after the second round of the 69kg Junior Novice division finals, when we felt that his exhaustion after giving it his all in the first two rounds would make it difficult to proceed into the third round safely. Kevin Hooper faced a tough bout in the +91kg Masters Novice Division finals against the tournaments largest boxer who clearly outweighed him and had very aggressive boxing style. He opponent took the win an RSCO (Outscore) in the third round.

Despite retuning without a win this weekend we are very proud of all their performances this past weekend, and anticipate seeing some great future performances coming from each of these athletes. Each of these athletes will be competing in our upcoming club Boxing show right here are Point Blank ion June 7th.

Brampton Cup (February 1, 2008 – Brampton)

Scott ‘Burgerboy’ Denotter of Team Point Blank Boxing competed in this weekend’s Brampton Cup in Brampton. This was Scott’s first ever boxing match and he put on a great performance against his opponent Dave Rosabeck of Steeltown Boxing in the semi-finals of the tournament. Scott took the lead in the first round, but his opponent came back in the second to tie up the score. Despite a back and forth battle in the last round his opponent won in the remaining seconds of the third round pulling ahead to win the bout 21 to 16 and move on to the finals.

We are very proud of Scott and look forward to working towards his next bout.
