Bullying - Prepare to deal with it

With Summer just around the corner, you might be looking for ways to keep your children entertained during the week.

Martial Arts Classes for Children are not only great fun, but they also teach really important life skills that help Children to develop as a person mentally as well as physically.

Anti-Bullying Martial Arts classes

Bullying is a problem in this country, just as it is in many others. But it's hard to realize quite how big a problem it is for our Children without seeing the statistics laid out in front of you. So here are a few of them...

1.5 million young people are bullied each year.

Nearly 1 in 5 of those are the subject of bullying every single day.

14% of young people admit to bullying somebody.

20% of all young people have physically attacked someone.

These are startling figures, but when you look at the knock on effects, they become even more serious...

44% of young people who have been bullied experience depression.

41% of young people who have been bullied experience social anxiety.

33% of those being bullied have suicidal thoughts.

33% equates to over a quarter of a million young people. That's how serious this problem is.

How can a Martial Arts class help tackle bullying?

Martial Arts can not eradicate the problem, nor can it prevent a bully deciding to pick on someone, it can help the victims of bullying stand up for themselves and learn how to defend themselves in a difficult situation.

More often than not someone is bullied because they appear to be an easy target. Whether it's because of the way the look or the fact they are smaller, they are usually perceived to be weaker and defenseless. Sometimes that may lead to verbal bullying, but it also leads to physical bullying. By learning some basic self-defense techniques, this can be combated and or/diffused.

In an anti-bullying class, the main aim of the Martial Arts Instructor will be to try and help the students regain the confidence they have lost as a consequence of bullying. Making them believe in themselves will go a long way to preventing further bullying.

Martial Arts classes will help both physically and psychologically. It will allow a young person to gain more perceptual awareness so that they can avoid dangerous situations. Similarly, it will also teach conflict resolution to get them out of said situations and importantly the respect and discipline taught by Instructors means that Children will act responsibly. Just because you know Martial Arts moves, it does not mean they need to be applied.

Anti-bullying classes will teach basic self defence techniques, for example how to get out of holds and effective strikes to stop an attacker. These are easily applied in real life situations.

If your child is being bullied, it's important to try and deal with the situation quickly. The longer it continues, the more damage that can be done. This is why a martial arts class can be very effective.

Year on year, anti-bullying campaigns are becoming bigger, louder and more effective. The problem is still rife, but more awareness than ever before is being created.

Confidence is a key attribute in being able to deal with bullies and the potential of being bullied. No one should have to live in the shadow of who they are based on the perception other people may have of them, or be picked on because of those perceptions.
